Carolers makes musical visits, deliver Christmas cards to Bloomington-Normal seniors

BLOOMINGTON — A West Bloomington church recently teamed up with a Twin Cities arts nonprofit to share holiday spirits, cards and songs with Bloomington seniors.

Founders of the nonprofit Threshold to Hope said they joined members of Point of Change Church of the Nazarene on Friday to spread Christmas cheer to residents of Arcadia Care Bloomington, Angler Manor assisted living apartments, and Bloomington Rehabilitation.

Nora Zaring is executive director of Threshold to Hope, which aims to use the power of art to help provide hope and healing to those who can least afford it. Zaring said artists from her nonprofit were enlisted to make Christmas cards for the seniors, adding that it was a small way for them to give back to their community.

She said their artists provided the cards, and Point of Change Church of the Nazarene corralled the carolers from their congregation to deliver joy and season’s greetings to the residents. Zaring said she went caroling with her husband, Dave Zaring; both are also members of the church and co-founders of Threshold to Hope.

Zaring said a group of a dozen carolers formed and started singing their favorite Christmas songs as they walked in to the residential centers. She said the joy on the seniors’ faces was rewarding and somewhat emotional for the carolers.

“We wanted to go to places that needed it the most — the places that don’t get very many visitors,” said Pastor Lisa Alvis, who led the group.

Zaring said they’re exploring more options for interacting with the residents again.

Threshold to Hope is found on the first floor of 200 W. Monroe St. in downtown Bloomington. Zaring said art may be created thereon a pay-what-you-can basis anytime the nonprofits doors are open. Contact Brendan Denison at (309) 820-3238. Follow Brendan Denison on Twitter: @BrendanDenison
